Icefields Parkway Tour from Canmore

Wildlife sightings along the Icefields Parkway are common but not guaranteed, and vary by season and time of day. Early morning and dusk tend to be more active periods, though we never promise specific sightings since wildlife movement isn’t something anyone can control.

The Columbia Icefield

The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest accumulations of ice and snow in the Rocky Mountains, feeding several major glaciers including the Athabasca Glacier, which is visible directly from the parkway. The icefield sits at the boundary of Banff and Jasper National Parks and is a major stop for most visitors travelling the full route. Like glaciers worldwide, the Athabasca Glacier has been retreating over recent decades, and markers along the approach to the glacier show how much further it once extended, which many visitors find one of the more striking parts of the stop.

Peyto Lake and the Bow Summit Viewpoint

Peyto Lake, reached by a short walk from a parking area near Bow Summit, is known for its distinctive wolf-head shape when viewed from above and its vivid turquoise colour, similar in origin to Lake Louise’s. The viewpoint sits at a higher elevation than most other stops on the parkway, and the walk up can feel more strenuous than expected given the elevation, though it remains manageable for most visitors. Bow Summit itself is one of the highest points on the parkway route, so weather here can differ noticeably from conditions lower down near Lake Louise or Jasper.

Waterfalls Along the Route

Beyond the major glacier and lake stops, the Icefields Parkway passes several waterfalls worth a short stop, including Bridal Veil Falls and Panther Falls, depending on the exact route and time available. These stops tend to be quicker than the larger destinations like the Columbia Icefield, making them useful for adding variety to the day without significantly extending the overall trip length.

Driving the Parkway in Different Seasons

Summer is the most straightforward season for driving the Icefields Parkway, with the road fully open and most facilities along the route operating. Shoulder seasons in spring and fall can bring more variable weather and occasional early or late-season snow at higher elevations, even when conditions in Canmore itself are mild. Winter travel on the parkway is possible but requires more caution, since sections of the highway can be affected by snow and, at times, temporary closures for avalanche control work.
